Check For GDC Accreditation When Going For Tooth Whitening

13 April 2013

It’s important that you make sure your choice of practitioner is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC) when looking for someone to carry out teeth whitening in Manchester city centre. Be aware that this can only legally be carried out by qualified individuals such as dental hygienists, dentists, clinical dental technicians or dental therapists.

You might think that it seems like a simple procedure to carry out but it’s vital that you make an appointment with someone who has the necessary qualifications and experience, so you know that you won’t be left either out of pocket or with damaged teeth.

This week, following a phone call from trading standards officers at Salford Council, the GDC launched an investigation into one health and beauty salon in Walkden that was offering tooth whitening. It was found that one woman at the salon had carried out teeth whitening without the proper qualifications and, as a result, she was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £4,500, according to a report in the Manchester Evening News.

If you’re serious about having your teeth whitened, make an appointment with your qualified dentist and discuss your options. There is also a lot you can do diet-wise that will immediately brighten up your smile.

Try not to smoke, make sure you eat lots of apples, popcorn, raw carrot and celery (which can help remove bacteria in the mouth), and do your best to avoid red wine, which can really discolour your teeth. Alternatively, follow up your glass of red with a glass of water as this can really help to reduce staining.
